Once again, Huntington Beach will be the center of all the surf/skate action when the U.S. Open of Surfing kicks off on July 23 and runs through July 31. The annual event draws over half a million people to Surf City not only for the prestigious surf contest, but also for the huge festival area that features skateboarding and BMX contests, games, autograph signings, product demos and freebies by industry brands, art exhibits by pro athletes, and much more.
Since 1959, Huntington Beach has hosted a major surf competition, with the exception of a brief hiatus in 1980 and 1981. Hosted by Vans this year, the world’s biggest surf contest attracts approximately 200 of the best surfers from around the world, and it’s always thrilling to watch the pros compete for one of the largest prize purses in the industry. Be sure to look for a few local surfers at the competition, including San Clemente’s Kolohe Andio, Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson (who won the title here in 2009 and 2010), and Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue, who is currently ranked the number one woman in the world.
The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is free to attend, and no tickets are needed to enjoy any of the festivities. For those fans who are interested in catching the surf action on the south side of the pier, plan to bring a beach towel or grab a seat on the bleachers. One of the best viewing points is to find a spot on the pier and then look directly down on the surfers as they ride the waves into shore. The pier tends to get very crowded, especially when the heats involve some of the most popular surfers, so plan to arrive early. Returning attendees know what to expect during the U.S. Open of Surfing, but people attending the surf competition and lifestyle festival for the first time might be surprised by the magnitude of the crowds. Yes, it’s madness in Surf City during the U.S. Open, but it’s also an exciting experience that’s big on fun.
