Improve Your Well-Being While Sheltering in Place

Self-care may not be at the top of your priority list while staying safer at home. Though work, kids, and a laundry list of other things may seem more pressing, at the end of the day, it’s your own mental health that matters the most. Here are a few ways to improve your well-being at home—because when you’re taken care of, you’re better equipped to take care of those around you.

Stay Connected

Sheltering in place can feel isolating, so it’s crucial to stay connected with friends and family during this time. Checking in via social media, phone, email, text, or FaceTime will benefit both you and your loved ones.

Get Fresh Air

It’s tough to stay indoors for an extended amount of time without going a bit stir crazy. To combat this, get outside—even if it’s just for a few minutes. Researchers have found that being out in nature is a scientifically proven mood-booster. Just be sure to stay at least six feet away from anyone you may encounter on your neighborhood stroll.

Take Breaks from the News

Of course you want to stay on top of the developing COVID-19 situation, but you also want to minimize anxiety—and there’s no doubt that a constant stream of news can send it skyrocketing. Take a step back from media coverage and consume news of COVID-19 in moderation from reputable sources.

Engage in Joyful Movement

Don’t feel bad about exercise routines that may have fallen by the wayside during these challenging times. Rather, do what you can to move your body in a way that feels pleasing to you. Taking a solo walk outside, stretching, and practicing yoga are gentle ways to honor your body while not overburdening yourself.

Form New Habits

Old routines are on hold for a while. In the interim, trying to form new daily patterns can help keep your mind focused and contribute to feeling more stable overall. Even little habits can be effective, from committing to making a cup of coffee every morning to carving out five minutes a day to meditate or check in on friends and family.

Give Yourself Grace

These are not normal times, so normal expectations for yourself should go out the window. Don’t beat yourself up for not achieving as much as you think you should during this time—simply taking it day by day and caring for yourself and your family is enough.
