Huntington Beach: Best Activities in Surf City USA

Huntington Beach is iconic among coastal Orange County cities for good reason.

Founded in 1909, Huntington Beach was named after oil tycoon Henry Huntington. Until the big oil boom of the 1920s, it was still a sleepy seaside town. However, as it grew, the city became famous for its surf swells and culture. In 1960, it earned the nickname Surf City USA. Keep reading to find out some of our favorite things to do in this beach city.

  1. Spend a Day at Pacific City

If you’re in the mood to shop ‘til you drop, what better place to do it than by the sea? Pacific City offers gorgeous views, unrivaled eats, and world-class shopping all in one spot. Located across from the Huntington Pier, the open-air mall is a great date spot. Grab coffee at Philz, work out at Equinox, or grab a bite. Pacific City has something for everyone.

  2. Surf the Pier

The Huntington Beach Pier showcases amazing year-round waves. All you need is your board and some skill — don’t try to shred waves here as a newbie. If you are more amateur, there are many options for surf lessons. Or sit and watch from the shore for some great entertainment.

  3. Get Artsy

There is no shortage of art and culture in Orange County. Huntington Beach Art Center hosts six exhibitions each year in its galleries. If you’re so inclined, there are also a number of art classes you can take. Get in touch with your inner writer or learn to paint with watercolors. Public admission to the art center is free every day.

  4. Sip a Cocktail at Tanner’s Treehouse

One of the most popular restaurants in Huntington Beach is Tanner’s. Serving sustainable coastal cuisine, it also features a rooftop bar called the Treehouse. Here, you can grab handcrafted cocktails while enjoying incredible ocean views. Happy hour and daily specials are just a bonus.

  5. Head to the Beach for a Bonfire

Natives of the city grew up at beach bonfires. The backyard barbeque’s coastal cousin is always the perfect ending to a day of surf and sand. Huntington State Beach is one of the few beaches in Orange County with public fire pits to cozy up to. All you need is firewood, s’mores essentials, and beach chairs for a memorable evening.
