Home design trends are changing dramatically for 2018.
With 2017 being the year of the minimalist, this year will be quite the opposite, showcasing the year of the maximalist. Prints will be bolder, colors will be more saturated, mixed media will be the focal point, and rooms will aim to be more “Instagram friendly” (this is not a joke). Whether you are looking to update a room, a wall, or the entire home, here are the lux trends to keep up with for 2018.
Stylish Maximalism
The over-decorated look is in and this year’s maximalism trend is going full blown 80s. We will see mixed patterns, large decor items, and more colors taking over interiors but with a contemporary edge. To perfect this trend, keep it modern while pulling inspiration from this era of the past. Think of combining layered rugs and printed wallpaper in the same room with saturated hues. Don’t be afraid to mix media such as metallics and textures, either. Try blending metallic finishes with matte furniture; the mix will create a little bit of glam while adding depth to any room. If you need to ease into this trend, focus on adding brassy details such as a lamp, a light switch, a small decor item, or even table legs.
Progressive Wallpaper
The wallpaper your mom had back in the day is not what we are looking for here. Wallpaper designers are creating chic patterns with bold colors that induce an elegant finish. If a pop of color isn’t your thing, go for textured wallpaper instead. And if doing a whole room isn’t your style, pick a wall in the entryway or bathroom to spruce up.
Floral Details
Adding florals to your interior design may seem intimidating. But using furniture pieces, wallpaper, pillows, curtains, or rugs are great options for this expression. With the 2018 Pantone color of the year being ultra-violet, which influenced the 2018 flower of the year, the purple rose, these are excellent combinations to incorporate into your daily scheme and make a delicate yet prominent statement.
Ceruse Wood Surfaces
Ceruse wood is created by a process that fills in and defines the structure of the wood. It makes a soft white finish, giving it a cottage-chic look and pairs flawlessly with coastal-inspired homes. You can incorporate this textured surface into your entire kitchen by redoing the cabinetry or choose accent pieces like dressers and end tables.
Modern Closets
Two thousand eighteen is the year of the closet. Everybody wants the dream wardrobe room with a changing area, center island, gorgeous lighting, glass doors, and staging areas. Because we are social media focused nowadays, the spotlight is on creating a space that achieves the perfect Instagram image. To make your closet Instagram-worthy, choose soft colors and textures, like fluffy white carpets and plush sitting areas. Lighting is essential, too as it can make or break any photo. To incorporate color, add in blushes, greys, or other muted colorful tones.
Vibrant Tones
As with most coastal homes, the neutral hues seem to take over representing the sandy beaches and pristine waters that surround us. This year is challenging this beloved beach-inspired trend by encouraging you to add deep, bold hues into your decor. Choose an accent wall or incorporate pillows, curtains, or decor pieces that follow along with your color scheme. You will maintain your soft and calm interior while making a big announcement when combining the bold statements with the muted surroundings.
Art Deco Accessories
We are going glam this year with coffered ceilings, gold-rimmed windows, luxurious materials, and geometric motifs. Originating in France in the 1920s, there are many elegant ways to incorporate these bold finishes into your home that harmonizes well with your style. Art deco is very much a maximalism trend, so starting small to ease your way into this dramatic change is very much encouraged. Go for gold geometric shapes, cool lighting fixtures, or metallic coatings to add a little fun to your space and play up this trend.
