Head south this summer to experience the excitement of Del Mar’s eight-week racing season, which kicks off on Opening Day on Friday, July 15 and runs through Labor Day Monday, September 5. Now in its 77th summer, Opening Day at Del Mar is a cherished summertime tradition in San Diego, where patrons celebrate the storied track “where the turf meets the surf.” For the Opening Day Hats Contest, the most extravagant and outrageous headwear will be on display, as well as fashionistas dressed to the nines.
Horse-racing enthusiasts always have much to look forward to at Del Mar, and this year’s most anticipated race, the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic, takes place on Saturday, August 20. The West Coast’s most important race on the circuit, the mile and a quarter Grade I Classic showcases the most elite Thoroughbreds. Summer racing at Del Mar takes place Wednesday through Sunday with the exception of Closing Day on Monday, Sept. 5.
In addition to horse-racing, Del Mar presents many other fun events throughout the season, including a Summer Concert Series, where music fans can attend a free show every Friday and certain Saturdays throughout the season. Among the musical acts appearing this summer are Cold War Kids, Fitz and the Tantrums, Ziggy Marley, Thievery Corporation, Pepper, and country singer Chris Young. Besides musical entertainment, Del Mar also features some of the best of San Diego’s craft beer and culinary scenes. Foodies can tempt their palates with the following events: Del Mar’s BBQ State Championship and Tasting, Del Mar’s Food Truck Festival, and Del Mar’s first Craft Beer and Pizza Festival.
There are several events for the entire family to enjoy this racing season too, including Family Weekends, with free family activities taking place in the infield every Saturday and Sunday. Del Mar’s Supersized Family Fun Day and Webkinz Horse Giveaway is scheduled for Sunday, July 17, with an array of activities planned for the youngsters. Children will also like Donuts Day at Del Mar on Saturday, July 16 and Saturday, August 13, where kids can munch on free donuts and get an opportunity to view the Thoroughbreds during their morning workouts.
