Surterre Properties® Hosts Successful eWaste and Document Shredding Event

Newport Beach residents were able to dispose of their old electronics and documents in a clean, green, and efficient manner at Surterre Properties’ eWaste and document shredding event on Saturday, January 25th. Held at Surterre’s Newport Beach offices, the event hosted many neighbors who participated and here are our numbers for the event:

  • We had 150 cars come through – about 50 cars per hour – or one car per minute!
  • We collected about 4,000 pounds of eWaste. Most of that is old computers, laptops, printers, and a dozen or so flat-screen TV’s plus misc. cables, wires, house fans, and microwaves. We can recycle anything that is powered by electricity or batteries.
  • Approximately 140 of the 150 cars had household documents to shred.

Surterre and the Newport Beach community’s commitment to ProShred and Goodwill’s environmentally conscious shredding and recycling services saved many trees. Longtime agent volunteers include: Jim Weisenbach, John Hoover, Esther Fine, Merle Stern, Judy Mertz, Jane Polley, Sue Podany, and more recently Bob Milliken and Shar JoharyReyes.

We have been hosting and promoting these events for 14 years. Typically, 85% of our visitors are repeats from past events – and it seems about 25% attend every one. The feedback we get is very positive – as people enjoy clearing clutter from their homes and garages while complying with the requirement not to dispose of electronic waste in landfills. We’ve been told by our recycling vendor that the plastic casings, metal, and silicon are shredded, melted, and reformed into the products we find next year at the electronics store.

A free service to the public, Surterre Properties’ eWaste and document shredding drives offer a convenient way for locals to keep the planet and its landfills clean. Everyone is encouraged to bring old electronics and documents for recycling. There are no forms to complete, and any stored data is safely and completely eradicated.

Surterre also hosts and participates in a number of philanthropic events throughout the year, including semi-annual blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross, a toy drive for children during the holidays, and volunteer days at local organizations such as Second Harvest Food Bank and Miracles for Kids.

Most recently, to commemorate Surterre’s legacy of community service and the roots they have firmly planted in their surrounding neighborhoods, the brokerage has teamed up with One Tree Planted to donate 44 trees for every home sold with a goal of planting 50,000 trees by Earth Day 2020.
